Chill casting

The cylinder heads consist of a high-strength aluminum alloy and are each fitted with 2 camshafts and 4 valves per cylinder.

The one-piece cylinder heads are permanent mold cast from high temperature aluminum alloy with sand cores inserted for the water jacket and load cycle ducts.

Due to the high specific output and a peak combustion pressure of up to 175 bar, the cylinder heads are subjected to high thermal and mechanical loads.

A new heat treatment method is used on the cast cylinder heads to further improve the material properties.

Note

Information for handling ceramic glow plugs:

  • The glow plugs must be removed before removing the cylinder head, and must not be reinstalled until the cylinder head has been installed.

  • Only use glow plugs from unopened original packaging.

  • If a glow plug is dropped on the floor, it must not be used.

  • These glow plugs are extremely sensitive to shocks. Hairline cracks may be produced in the ceramic element. As a consequence, parts of the ceramic element may become detached and drop into the combustion chamber while the engine is running. This can result in engine damage.
